about the figure

Theodoros Kolokotronis was the most important martial and political personality of the Greek War of Independence in 1821. Characteristics like intelligence, daring, discretion and speech’s gravity, were obvious from his early youth. These are the reasons for calling him The Old Man of Morias. He was born in Ramavouvi, Messenia in the 3th of April 1770. His family’s origin was from the village of Libovisi in Arcadia. His family –with Tsergini being the founder of the Kolokotronis family-set off many brave kleftarmatolous fgihters, taking a huge sacrifice for the battle of liberation against Ottomans. Until the beginning of the revolution, seventy men from the family were dead in battles.

He played a leading role in several military operations and important turning points of Greek Revolution. The victory in the battle of Baltetsi in May 1821 was the first victory against Ottomans, which strengtened the siege of Tripoli. The conquest of Tripolitsa (September 1821) was the first important success of the Greek War of Independence, which stabilized the rebels in the area. The devastation of Pasa Dramali’s 30000 troops in Dervenakia where Kolokotronis mobilized common villagers and transformed them into fearful fighters, consolidate the revolution in Moria (Peloponnesus). In these operations the intelligence, perceptiveness and boldness of his strategic mind prevailed. This success made him well known as the Field Marshall of Peloponnesus.

He died in 4th of February from brain congestion after the marriage of his little son,Kolinos and buried into the A Cemetery of Athens. He died very poor concerning his financial situation but extremely rich from the love of the Greek population. He was also happy enough to see his beloved motherland free, for which he fought hard with unselfishness, generousity, vision and faith.

This paragraph is taken from the historical note supplied in the kit.

The figure AM 54-12 represents General Theodoros Kolokotronis in Greek War of Independence 1821-29.

box

The figure comes in a 125 x 80 x 45 mm. dark green good quality cardboard box. The front cover shows a photo of the painted figure. Note that the photo is a mirror image showing the right arm pointing forward as in real the left arm of the figure points forward and right arm is posed to put on the right side.

Inside the box, there is an A4 paper sheet including historical info and photos to be used as a painting guide. This document is represented in 2 languages; Greek and English. Historical research is made and text is prepared by our friend, Historicus Forma Associate Editor Costas Rodopoulos. 4 color photos from different angles serve as a good painting guide.

Parts are well protected between two slabs of thick white polyfoam and small parts are secured in a plastic bag. The figure base is placed under the polyfoam not to damage the figure parts.

parts

The figure is sculpted by Greek sculptor Ch.Panagiotopoulos and made up of 5 white metal parts. All parts are cast clean and crisp in very good details. A fast cleaning wıth a metal brush will make it ready for priming.

The figure is cast and represented in one piece. Only the right arm and a few accessories are supplied as seperate parts. The face of figure is nicely sculpted in good details showing good similarities as compared to historical paintings of Theodoros Kolokotronis. The moustache, nose type and long hair are well defined. He wears a metal helmet with a short visor ,under-chin strap, a Greek- square cross on the front part and longitudinal crest on top. The flower designs on both sides of the helmet and reliefs on the crest holder are well represented.

He wears a waistcoat with wide and out-folded sleeves over his shirt. The waistcoat shows nice braided gold thread embroidery in front and back and on sleeves. The lion symbol and other decorations on the shoulders are nicely represented. Inside the outer waistcoat, he wears a white cotton shirt named Ghileki and a crossed sleeveless waistcoat named Koumbori. A wide sash-cloth belt is wrapped on his waist and another thin leather belt is tied over it to carry pistoles and pouche.

He wears the traditional foustanella kilt, the pleated white skirt made by triangular shaped pieces of cloth called langolia which are sewn together diagonally. The folds of the skirt are well defined. He has under-knee leggings with rich decorations and leather shoes. Two pins under the feet makes the figure assembly easier to the figure base.

Other parts are ;

  • Right arm : The lion head embroidery on the shoulder and cloth folds are well defined. The right hand is cast on the waist of the figure and it fits well to the hollow on the right arm. This makes the arm assembly easy and correct fit.

  • Pistoles : He carries 2 pistoles, with flintlock firing mechanism, chiseled steel barrel and richly decorated hand carved stock, inserted into his cloth belt. Pistoles are cast together with a part of cloth belt and can be easily attached to the hole on the figure.

  • Pouche : He carries a small decorative gunpowder pouche on the right back. A small hole on the figure’s back makes the assembly of this part easier.

  • Sword : He carries a Shamsir, deeply curved long sword in his scabbard. The scabbard shows nice metal decorations on the top and tip. It is carried with a long leather plaited strap cross-wise on the right shoulder. Strap parts are nicely cast with the scabbard in this figure.

  • Figure base : A small and simple figure base with nice ground texture is supplied.

    conclusion

Another good posed historical figure representing a famous character of Greece. The casting quality, ease on assembly with less parts and the pleasure of painting a colorful figure makes it unique for painters.

    Highly Recommended
